Takeaway
Fake news isn’t a new issue, but today everyone can publish anything and everyone can access it. Tim explained that Google isn’t and can’t be a “ledger of absolute truth,” but does do what it can to balance returning relevant search results with ensuring that those results, particularly for breaking news, come from authoritative sources. But algorithms aren’t the total solution; 82% of middle schoolers can’t distinguish sponsored content from real news, reinforcing the need for media literacy programs.
